Passion 1-26-03

Revelation 3:19; Romans 12:11

One of the most attractive qualities a person can have is passion. Great leaders in every area of life, both villainous and heroic, are people with passion. It draws like a magnet. Hitler is said to have mesmerized people with his speeches because of the passion with which he spoke. Dwight L. Moody had the same affect on people. One affected the world for evil, and the other for good, but they both had the quality of passion that made people pay attention.

What is passion? John Maxwell says, It is the energy of the soul. One of Websters definitions is, A strong liking for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept. The Old Testament idea of passion was often applied to God as the One who was jealous for His peoples heart. It is likened to a consuming fire. Song of Songs 8:6 (NIV) 6 Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.

It was this zeal of God for His people that destroyed their enemies. But it was the same zeal that sent them into captivity when they were unfaithful. It was this passion that restored Israel after captivity. (Isaiah 42:13) The same passion that God has for His house to be clean and holy. (Psalm 69:9) It is the same passion that would send a Savior who would be clothed in zeal. (Isaiah 9:7, 59:17) Using Websters definition of a strong liking for or devotion to Jesus would have to be the most passionate man to ever live. He did not do or say one thing without the approval of His Father. We will never see a more passionate life than that of Jesus. It was a life consumed with pleasing the Father even unto death.

The Great Commandment was for them to love the Lord their God with ALL their heart, soul, mind, and strength. You could say that God asked them to be as passionate about Him as He was passionate toward them. This is not a superficial emotion! It is a state of being totally involved, wrapped up in, enamored with the one on whom it is placed.

We can be passionate about the wrong things. Romans 10:2 (NIV) 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. The Jewish leaders, at the time of the early church, were zealous for the letter of the Law. They wanted to be perfect at keeping their definition of the rules, while God was looking for changed hearts. Paul said he was so zealous for the Law the he persecuted the church. (Philippians 3:6)

The good kind of zeal is a zeal that is relational, like Gods zeal is for us. That overflows into being zealous to do good works. (Titus 2:14) Just like a when a husband is passionate about his wife, he wants to do things that please her. Men, if you are passionate about your wife, you will not have trouble saying no to the temptations that will come your way. In the same way, if we are passionate about God, about our personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the world will have little sway on us. Why? Because you have a love that far surpasses all others!

Have you met someone that you would say had a passion for a hobby? Some men have a passion for football. This is their Great High and Holy Day Super bowl Sunday. They've followed both divisions all through the year. They can quote stats like you'd love to quote the Bible. They are serious about it. They know every quarterback, his back up, his number, and details about his family. They always have their favorite team that they are extra passionate about. And if that team gets in the Super bowl, Lord help us all. Hes got the team jacket and pennant flag, the mug and T-shirt and if he can, hell mortgage his house to get seat in that stadium. It is a little annoying being around him, but at the same time, it is exciting. Why? Hes alive! Hes got something to live for even if it is a bunch of grown men banging into each other over a pigskin full of air.

Tony Compolo wrote that, We are caught up in a particular stage in our national ethos, in which we are not only materialistic, but worse than that, were becoming emotionally dead as a people. We dont sing, we dont dance, and we dont even commit sin with very much enthusiasm.

Were becoming a nation of self-satisfied couch potatoes. We have what we need. We dont want to be bothered. Just let us go to sleep in our stupor of sufficiency. YAWN! One of my greatest struggles in teaching High School youth is to get them beyond apathy. I hear over and over, What difference does it make. They dont say that to me anymore, because I launch into a passionate explanation of the difference it makes.

Kirkegard wrote, Age will die not from sin but from a lack of passion. If the enemy of our soul can just lull us to sleep in our satisfied, unconcerned, do nothing deadness, we are of no threat to the realm of darkness. Max Lucado put it this way, The poison of the ordinary steals the magic of the moment. What has happened to us?

It reminds me of the church of Laodicea. God just wanted them to be passionate one way or the other, anything but lukewarm. Jesus personal warning for those without passion, who were self-satisfied, not realizing they were desperately in need, went like this, Rev. 3:19 (NIV) 19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. Be earnest! In Greek that means to boil! In a negative sense, boil with anger, or with jealousy. In a positive sense, it means a zealous pursuit of good, or to exert yourself for something, in this case repentance. Are you boiling? The command from the lips of Jesus is, Be boiling! Change the way you think!

That lukewarm spirit is a spirit of apathy. That is an interesting word in the Greek. A as a prefix in Greek means without. The last half of the word is pathos. It means feeling or emotion. Apathy then means to not have feelings or emotions. You just really dont care. God says that is the one thing He cant stomach. Be cold or boiling, but dont be in between.

The Apostle Paul admonishes us to (Romans 12:11 (NIV)) 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Zeal is from the Greek word spoude spoo day. We have a family in town with that last name. It means to be diligent, earnest, to hurry, with effort. We are never supposed to be anything less than diligent and in earnest. Fervor comes from the same root word we looked at in Revelation (zeo), to boil with heat. Dont simmer! Dont be lukewarm, but keep passionately boiling! Keep your spiritual fervor. So an expanded translation would be, Never be anything less than diligent, earnest, making an effort, but keep on boiling as you serve the Lord!

Would you say you were walking in the fullness of the Apostles instruction?  I can tell you I'm not, but I intend to by the grace of God. Forgive me for not being more passionate. One Gallup pole said the number one factor in people choosing a church is the passion of the Pastor. It ought to be the leading of the Holy Spirit. This deciding factor of a passionate pastor is intricately connected with our cultures search for relevance and meaning. We see passionate people as having found a reason to live, something to strive for. What do your neighbors and acquaintances see in you? Has your passion for the good caused them to wonder what you've found?

Why do we lack passion? I think one reason we lack passion is our dullness to the wonder of all that God is doing for us. We allow our hearts to get calloused toward His display of love. Enough of the tears, I just want to enjoy today, and I dull myself to the magic of the moment. I let busyness fill my mind and numb my heart. The wonder of His interaction in my life, I come to expect as routine, instead of letting my heart be gripped by it. My eyes of faith close as I fix them on the world and troubles around me. And as my eyes of faith close, the realization of Gods great love for me begins to fade.

Passion makes us stand out and be noticed, and we feel more comfortable just fitting in. Lets face it, no one likes the person that makes waves and challenges the status quo, and that is what passionate people are always doing. Their passion challenges every lukewarm person they contact, and just like in Jesus world, they will love or hate you for it. Its so much easier just to blend in. One reason Peter, James, John, and Andrew are mentioned first is their passion. Passion pushed them to the front and opened their mouths. James and John were so passionate they were called the Sons of Thunder. Peter needs no explanation. His passion is his testimony! Andrew was the one that went around recruiting disciples, We've found the Messiah!  We've found the Messiah!

Another reason for the lack of passion is we haven't seen the purpose God has for our lives. We havent grabbed hold of His vision for us. Self is our little tiny goal, and that is not very exciting. Then there is the problem of these physically aging bodies. How can we be boiling when our body is declining? Apathy tends to increase with age. John Maxwell says, Wise young believers are as rare as zealous old believers. The older we become, the more set in our ways and desirous of the status quo we usually are. It doesn't have to be that way, but that is the tendency of man.

Oh but what a difference when we reject the natural tendencies of man and walk in the Spirit! Your willingness and desire for the fire and passion of God are going to be proportionate with how God uses you. Think of it like this: The person with little passion has little vision and little hope of God accomplishing great things. According to your faith, it will be done unto you. Passion is an ingredient for a life that makes a difference. Passion will increase your will power, your self-discipline, raise the level of your goals, and give you a vision beyond that of ordinary man. Apathetic people put as little on their schedule as they possibly can. Passionate people have schedules that are packed and carefully planned in wisdom to accomplish the most they can possibly do.

Passion touches lives but it also changes you! Augustan said that unless you had something to die for, you haven't begun to live. When I do a word study, I always want to find out how God uses the word in Scripture. When we took a look at the way God used the word love, we found that it was almost always defined by a willingness to die. That is passion. That is love that goes beyond reason, beyond intellectual thought. Have you found something you are willing to die for?

The very first definition in Websters for passion may surprise you. It is the scene that ultimately defines passion. It is the suffering of Christ. That is why we have Passion plays, Passion week. We describe passion by Christs display of His passion to free us from our sin by dying in our place. The more man abused Him, the more passion He displayed for us. He could have just gone over the hill where the Garden of Gethsemane was and kept on going. Why stay and sweat drops of blood thinking about our sins being placed upon Him? Ill tell you why. He passionately loves you. He could have revealed His glory in that Sanhedrin trial, and they would have all been crying out for mercy. Why didn't He? It was His passion to see you right with God. He could have answered every accusation with such wise clarity that Pilate would have been ashamed not to let Him go, but His passion held His tongue. At any time during His scourging and crucifixion, He could have called a legion of angels to destroy His enemies. Why didn't He? You know the answer. Passion!

In every revelation of God through Jesus we are called to be like Him. You've probably noticed that I use the word Christ-likeness in nearly every sermon. It is God's passionate vision for you. If God is so passionate about us, how should we be toward Him?  Have you ever seen a one sided relationship where the wife is so in love with her mate, but the husband is nonchalant? Don't you just want to smack him upside the head and say, Hey, the girl is head over heals for you! Don't you get it? Don't you appreciate it? I think we could all look at the cross the Passion and slap ourselves. Get over the numbness, the callous attitude, and get some passion!

What are we about? What is Wayside here for? Are we just being comfortable and happy till Jesus comes for us? That is how you spell APATHY. So what would a passion that reflects the passion Jesus has for us look like? How would it express itself in your life? There is not one answer for all of us. We can generalize, but there is a specific answer for you. Only a passionate heart, willing to behold the cross, will lead you to that answer!

I can wind you up, but I cant give you passion. No one can! Jesus isnt going to hand it to you on a silver platter. He handed it to you already on a bloody cross. You've got to take it and let it heat you up until you boil. What is burning on the inside will manifest itself on the outside in your daily life. It will manifest itself in an intense love for God that will keep you from sin. I'm not saying you'll never make a mistake, but when the question is clear, you wont have to sit down and figure it out. Your passion will have already made the decision. Passion results in a radical commitment the kind that is willing to not only stand out, but die for the passion you've found. It will affect your work, you leisure, your worship, your home, and every area of your life. It will include the all of the Great Commandment, all your heart, all your soul, all your mind and all your strength. It will cause a hatred for sin and love for the things of God.

Passion is contagious. (2 Corinthians 9:2) Those who don't run from you will end up being more like you as you become more like Jesus. Why is passion so powerful? God is passionate, and the angels are passionately praising God! The departed saints are passionately worshiping God. All heaven is passionate. Maybe people are getting a glimpse of eternity when they see godly passionate people. The world doesn't see enough of them. It saw a dozen passionate men in the first century, and the world was never the same. Christians have every reason to be the most passionate people on the planet.

How do we find passion?  How can we let our hearts boil?  Where do we catch the fire of God? You'll have to wait till next week for part two, but you don't have to wait to start passionately responding to His love for you.  Be praying for a willingness to become a more zealous person because of His passion for you.

How To Have Mountain-Moving Faith

I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. (Matt. 17:20)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I received an email the other day with a story of a person traveling to a mountain range in Canada. The person entered the valley and was hit with the beauty of all the flowers. They were not wild flowers. There was someone or some people who had taken time to plant all those flowers. It was ablaze with color. At the local restaurant the traveler asked the waitress if the town had paid for the planting of the flowers. She said no and told the story of a lady who was now in her seventies who planted each and every bulb. As a little girl this woman had vowed to plant flowers in this valley. Every day she would buy a few bulbs and go plant. Every day she would set aside a few coins. Over 60 years of patient planting produced a portrait of beautiful flowers.

What about you? Is there something in your life that needs to be accomplished but you believe that the challenges soar above you like the Rocky Mountains? Let me ask you, How did these United States of America in the 1960s begin to have a dream of flying a man to the moon? Consider all of those obstacles and the technology of that time. Computers then filled rooms and had much less memory. We did not have the metals and plastics then that we have now. What happened? Faith!

Jesus Christ taught that all you need is a little bit of faith. Jesus was stating this in a middle of a discussion as to why his disciples could not cast out a particularly strong demon from a child. So He says, However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting. So lets break it all down. Let me give you a few steps that you can begin to put into practice and have mountain moving faith.

First Begin Small. Did you realize that all big corporations, big movements, and big changes all begin with a small idea or group of people? Dell computers started in a dorm room. Subway began an idea of a father given to his sons so they could earn money at college. Abrahams faith in God makes him the father of three major religions today: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Consider Jesus parable of the talents. He tells of a master who gives his servants some funds to manage. Two of them double the investment and one hides his one talent. The two who managed their small amounts are rewarded. Note the commendation:

"His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord (Matt. 25:23).

George Washington Carver was a brilliant scientist and a Christian. I read once where he prayed to God to let him study the peanut and learn everything about it. He would develop 300 applications for the peanut that we use today.

Second - Be Persistent. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting. Persistence is a key to moving mountain faith. The people who get to the top in their sports do so because they persist. Persistence in noted in the daily practice of a skill. It is witnessed in the ability to accept each failure as a lesson learned. Every inventor who successes with on great idea will have thousands of failures behind him or her. My son played high school football and his junior year his team went all the way to the state championship were they lost. The coach turned their frowns into cheers when he told them, Do not look at this as a failure. Only two teams make it to the state level. And you are one of them! You made it to the show! You have nothing to be ashamed of. It was a close game. Either team could have won. Persistence helps us to keep going. In the movie, Rudy, the main character had a desire to play for Notre Dames football team. He did not have the grades or the money to go to Notre Dame. He was small in size but he had a big dream. Persistence led him to find ways to make it to the team.

Third - Be Patient. Patience is the twin sister of persistence. Patience is the attitude of the mind. The book of James teaches us: But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing (James 1:4). Patience gives perspective to a challenge. It helps us to slow down, to observe, and to avoid mistakes. Proverbs teaches us: The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, But those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty (Prov. 21:5).

Fourth Be Prepared. Praying and fasting are means of preparation for mountain moving faith. The prayer aspect is seeking Divine will, strength, cleansing of the soul, and increasing sensitivity to the move of God in moving mountains. Fasting is simply denial. It is self-sacrificing. This is gets to the foundation of moving mountains. A young girl dreams of being a figure skating and winning the gold medal at the Olympics. This means practice. It also means giving up time and certain pleasure her friends enjoy. It means she makes practice a priority over Girl Scouts, parties, and even some vacations. It means following the instructions of coaches and parents. It means giving up candy and junk food (not a bad idea!) for a healthy diet. It also means that when opportunity arises to go!

Conclusion. Mountain moving faith is hard work. But we must remember the Wisdom of Solomon who writes, The end of a thing is better than its beginning (Eccl. 7:8). We need to keep the end in focus when we step into mountain moving faith. So

Begin Small.

Be Persistent.

Be Patient and

Be Prepared

Universal Life Church

Since I started writing, I have two reasons why I write. The first is I feel something deep in my spirit that drives me to type it all out. There are other times I write as a discipline. I sit down and just think of a word that describes an event or experience I have had. I started this as a discipline, but I finish having found the lesson in the following.

Dry?

Dry

There is a downside to pretty weather. We have been enjoying the wonderful cool and dry weather here in Mississippi. For close to a month we have not had any substantial rain after what seemed to be three months of stormy weather. I have enjoyed everyday that a shining sun has greeted me. Yesterday evening I was in my front yard and I noticed all my shrubs and ivy were drooping. I have a flowering shrub on the side of the house that has been progressing in this droopy look. I know it must be that I am just slow for I never connected the drooping plants to the fact we have had no rain. I was saying to my wife, "I wonder what is wrong with all these plants?" I looked down at my shoes with dust all over them and it was a great eureka moment?. they are dry.

Just a month ago I was bragging about how beautiful my grass looks, and now it is starting to look very dry. This morning I arose and pulled out my water hose and began to water my thirsty plants and reflected on my own life. In seasons when things are going well, the danger we all face is dryness. It is hard to diagnose your problem, because you can check off where you pray and attend church, however over time, if you don't recognize the problem, you will face the reality that your spirit life has dried up.

I suppose I can relate to some degree to my azalea bush, St. Augustine Grass, Nandinas, and the other plans that live in my yard. Living is not enough to stay alive. Surviving is not enough to survive. Just as I realized the investment I had in all these plants was about to disappear, it is possible to allow pretty weather to lull us into thinking everything is fine.

Later this morning as I turned my attention to my wife's very dirty van, I began to apply the warm sudsy water and scrub the dirty rims, I realize this is what we all need to do in our spiritual life. We need to make a little extra effort to be sure the foliage of our faith does not droop or the blooms on our hope do not fall away.

I am in awe at what God has done around me in the past nine months. It is like nothing I would have expected. From moving, to our first services in Clinton and the wonderful experiences and people along the way, I want to be sure I make the extra effort to keep everything well watered.

Storms bring rain and in spite of the boisterous thunder and blinding lighting, there is a forgotten element that is the blessing of the storm. Our lives, harvest, hope and spirit receives rain from heaven. It opens our spirit to drink in the rain and hope for a day when the sun is shinning. My little message today is admonition to all of us.

If you're in a storm, the precipitation is watering your promise. If your in the middle of a fulfilled prophecy, be thankful and take the steps to be sure you are getting what you need to keep your spirit properly watered.

I am thankful I could take a deep drink from that Fountain today, to see the wonderful hand of the shepherd leading me beside the still water this morning as he used the condition of my yard to be a parable that ministered to my heart.

May you drink deeply of His Spirit today!

In Him, By Him, Through Him,

Scott Phillips

Following the Gospel
Making the World a Better Place.

This nation was founded on Christian principles. The majority of Americans claim to have some kind of religion. You may find the Holy Bible in 90% of our homes. That's the good news.

Now the bad news:

It's plain to see that very few folk read their bible. It says in the Gospel According to Matt-hew, Chapter 24 Verse 5; For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ, and shall deceive many. That is so true and frightening. If you have wondered why there are so many different de-nominations of religion, this is the reason. Some can be considered Cults, false religions. They are the works of men, not God.

It seems that people are too gullible, and if a man is a "forceful speaker", they believe every-word he says.

(1). Hitler deceived the whole nation of Germany making them believe that the Jewish people were trash, an inferior race, and needed to be exterminated. <><><> ?Thou shall not kill?.

(2). Charles Manson had a large following, ;and he, like Hitler, made them believe murder was alright, nothing wrong with it, if it served your purpose. <><><> ?Thou shall not kill?.

(3). Then there?s the large party that followed Rev Jim Jones to South America, and were persuaded, or forced to drink poison. (See that ye be not deceived).

(4). Read about the Mountain Meadow Massacre, carried out by the (LDS) Mormons in Utah, circa, 1856. They call themselves Mormons, and have a book printed which they call the Book of Mormons. I call it The Book Of Morons.

All that is true history. All one needs do is check it out. Don't Take My Word For It.
"If any miserable scoundrels come here, cut their throats." Brigham Young

"The Mountain Meadows Massacre stands without a parallel amongst the crimes that stain the pages of American history. It was a crime committed without cause or justification of any kind to relieve it of its fearful character... When nearly exhausted from fatigue and thirst, [the men of the caravan] were approached by white men, with a flag of truce, and induced to surrender their arms, under the most solemn promises of protection. They were then murdered in cold blood."

William Bishop, Attorney to John D. Lee.

All of this is very frightening to me, to even think of having people in the world like that. It is my solemn promise to alert everyone I can about these things and try to make this a better world. I am 83 years of age, have 4 lovely daughters, and many grands and greats. So you can see why it is so important for me to want a clean safe world for them. I will strive to do unto others as I would have them do unto me. Be a friend and help others when I can.

It's sad to know that all my efforts will be of no great consequence, knowing scripture con-cerning the Great Tribulation Period which is to come. Nonetheless I will make every effort to get in touch with as many people as I can, and attempt to make them see how things are going, and to not just "blindly" follow someone. May God help us all. Amen

Reverend Preacher Everette Carl Fox

Methods and Message of the Maker
Changing Methods and the Eternal Message of an Unchanging Maker

"God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;.."

Is it not amazing to consider the different ways God speaks and communicates to this world? If you study Gods dealing with man, you will find he rarely used the same method twice. In the Miracles of Jesus, he never duplicated what he had done before in the same method. He was confronted with the same need many times, but he seemed to reach into the creativity of the Divine to leave a lesson for us to learn.

Though his methods vary, the message of God to humanity has not changed. The Lord has been giving clear signs and confirmations to the things he values. God understands the power of perception. He has gone to great lengths to impress on humanity some basic principles of his nature and desires. Why would God go to such a great length to manifest the divine in humanity for a plan that would not finally culminate for hundreds and thousands of years? I say it is because he wants us to get a picture and perception of his nature. This picture and perception can change the way we see and how we live our lives. This vision of God changes the way men interact with each other. When we get a proper vision of the values of a holy God, it is a life transforming opportunity.

"Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;" Heb 1:3

I believe God is still watching the power of his message bring about the fullness of his will. Person to person as the Gospel is transmitted in words, action and the very spirit/ attitude of those he uses brings about a universal view of the maker of it all.

Imagine in your mind the Eternal Spirit of God putting on the garments of flesh to redeem men from the destructive power of carnality. Eye for an Eye, Flesh for Flesh, Hope for despair, healing for disease, direction for confusion, beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning and whatever the problem there is a corresponding solution found in the revelation of Christ.

Think about the many things God has done for you in your life. Get a picture in your mind of this. Arm yourself with the sword of a miraculous memory. Equip your life with the prophetic words you have received and read. Catch a glimpse of a victorious savior shaking the worlds and bringing all men to bow the knee even to confession of his Lordship.

No matter your situation. God has a Special work he can and will bring to bear.

Just thinking about the only God and Saviour Jesus Christ!

In Him, By Him, Through Him,

Scott Phillips

Jude 1:25
25 To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

Titus 3:4-7
4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Titus 2:13
13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

1 Tim 2:3-6
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

My Beloved
Song of Solomon 2:8-13, Psalm 45:1-2, 6-9, James 1:17-27, Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

The Pharisees were decent people. They had a program. They regarded the Roman occupation of their land as the judgment of God on Israel. They believed that because of Israels impurity and sin, God was keeping away from them, and thus the Temple was empty of Gods glory and the throne was empty of Davids dynasty. The Pharisees believed that if Israel were righteous, then God would forgive them and come back.

So their strategy was to keep the Laws of Moses very strictly. If the Law told Levites to wash their hands, then all the Jews should wash their hands. If it told them to wash before a sacrifice, then they should wash before eating anything. If it said not to cook a kid in its mothers milk, then never cook meat and milk together at all. This scrupulous kind of righteousness would win again Gods favor, forgiveness, and return. That was their program, and Jesus was their problem, because Jesus wasnt helping. Thats why they were against him. The felt he was keeping God away.

Jesus was saying that God already had come backthat is, in himand that God was already forgiving sins, the sins of the sinners as much as the righteous. Jesus disputed the whole approach to their religious practices. Dont get him wrong. Its not that Jesus denied the value of good works and religious practices. His own brother James, the author of our Epistle, certainly did not hear him to say that. His point is that our religious practices and our good works are not where we connect with God. Its in our souls where we connect with God. Your soul is what must be clean for God, no matter how clean your hands may be or how holy your practices.

You have a soul. You are a soul. You know yourself as a body, with a certain look and a certain height and a certain weight, but you need to know yourself as a soul. Your soul is the most important thing about you. The business of your soul is the most important business that you have. You need to cultivate your soul. The cleaning of your soul, the grooming of your soul, the care and feeding of your soul, the exercising of your soul, this is the most important thing you do each day.

When you get up in the morning, how long do you take to get ready? How much time do you need to make your breakfast, to shower, to groom yourself in front of the mirror, to get dressed? How much time do you give to your morning workout, or your visit to the gym? Such things are good to do, your body is a gift of God to you, you should honor it and care for it and rejoice in it. It is meant someday to live forever before the face of God. But how much time do you give to the grooming and feeding of your soul?

The cultivation of our bodies has benefits discernible and immediate. We feel good when we eat and when were clean. When we look good we get compliments. But the payoff from the cultivation of our souls is never so discernible nor immediate. The soul is something of a mystery, even for those who are most spiritual. Indeed, the more you know your soul, the more mysterious it is. Thats from the very nature of the soul itself, its from the way it was designed by God. The soul is designed for transcendence, it is designed to reach beyond the boundaries of sound and sight and sense, your soul is grounded in your mind but it reaches beyond your mind.

Your soul is the leading organ of your body. The soul is the organ that gives the definition to our species. What the nose is for the dog, and what ears for the bat, and eyes for the eagle, so the soul is the special organ given to our species for the distinct vocation of our specieswe are the animals designed for spirituality, for transcendence, for the beyond. The Bible sees our species as among the animals, its as plain as Noahs Ark, but yet we have a special place and office among the animals. The Epistle of James says that we are a kind of first fruits of Gods creatures. We are those creatures that are dedicated to God, that are set aside for God, for special attention to God, for a special relationship to God.

In our culture today we see a reawakening to transcendence and a revival of spirituality. Yet so much of this spirituality is self-absorbed. Its the soul turned in on itself. Its all about self-empowerment and discovering ones own divinity. This fashionable approach to spirituality is like looking in a mirror, to use the metaphor of James 1:24. You can look and look but when you look away you disappear, you cannot be at rest in your own self alone, you can only rest in God. Why gaze in the mirror when you can look at your Beloved? Truest love is not the love of self but the love of someone other than yourself, someone who is always other than yourself.

Our souls belong to us but they are not designed for ourselves. We are designed for God. St. Augustine said, "Thou has made us for thyself, O God, and our souls are restless till they find their rest in thee." Our souls are lost and wandering until we find our true goal and our proper object. The proper purpose of our souls is our relationship with God. Your soul is that organ of your body which directs your body to live for God. Your soul is meant to animate your body and calibrate your feelings and integrate your actions and motivate your mind. But it can only do this if it is directed beyond yourself. Your soul cannot be satisfied until it is satisfied with God.

God is your souls Beloved, and your soul is the Beloved of God. Your soul is the handmaiden of God. In the Bible, the soul is regarded as feminine, even the souls of men. This is a wonderful and healing metaphor, for men as well as women, in different ways. I want to be clear that it is metaphorical and not essential, because finally God has no sexuality, God is a Spirit, God is neither male nor female, so the femininity of our souls is finally a metaphor, but it is a metaphor which God has given as a gift to us.
Its a great gift to feel your soul as a she, and to be able to identify with the Virgin Mary, and to sing with her, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my savior, for he has regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden." I am the Virgin who becomes a mother, I am a handmaiden who becomes a lover, I am the servant who becomes a Beloved. I am my beloveds and my Beloveds mine.

I close with words from James: Welcome with meekness the implanted word that has power to save your souls. The saving of your souls he means is not just when you die, but for today. The word of God has power to keep our souls alive, and more, to give us abundant life. The word of God is the food of your soul. And God desires to feed us. God loves us. God loves your soul. So it doesnt depend on us, except that we open ourselves to God. It is all gift. Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a find of first fruits of his creatures.

5 Pillars of Forgiveness
Matthew 6:14-15

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oscar Wilde once said, Always forgive your enemies nothing annoys them so much. With that said, forgiveness is one of those things we do that can help a person recover and be restored to relationships. Jesus said that we are to be peacemakers and one of our tools is supposed to be is forgiveness. When you look up the word in the dictionary it reads, To grant free pardon or remission of any offense or debt; to give up all claim. That last part may be difficult. Some are willing to say, I forgive you, but want to claim a grudge or say in their heart, I am keeping my eye on you. Today, we will look at the five pillars of forgiveness as a means of learning how to use this tool more effectively.

First -- Forgiveness Is A Command Not A Suggestion.
Forgiveness is a blessing when done. Note that in the Lords prayer we read in verse 12: And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Preceding this is the text that says, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. What is Gods will? His will is that men be forgiven of their sins. Not just the sins between man and God but also between each other. This is why Jesus says, after teaching this prayer, For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you (v. 14). The blessing is that when we forgive, we are in fellowship with God. The lines are kept open. He hears our prayers. We are in line with His purpose and He can work through us.

Unforgiveness is a barrer when we fail to disobey: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. A failure to give closes the door to His blessings. Think about this for a moment. A failure to forgive leads the door open for division. This is especially true in the church. Note Pauls comments concerning two women who were not reconciled in Philippi:

I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord. And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life. (Philippians 4:2-3)

Forgiveness is a priority to be done. So a failure to forgive one another in the body of Christ is a poor witness of our love. It becomes a toehold for the devil. This is why Jesus teaches that forgiveness must be a priority in Matthew 5:23-24:

Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

It is so important that worship must stop. Why? God will not accept your worship until it is done!

Second There Is No Limit To Forgiveness.
Is there a limit to forgiving a person? How about you? Do you want to be forgiven every time you fail and realize you blew it? Do you want to be separated from your loved ones forever because they failed to forgive you for the 15th time for forgetting to take out the trash? In Matthew 18 we have question presented by Peter about how many times we should forgive:

Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. (Matthew 18:21-22)

Jesus uses exaggeration to make His point. It would be a burden to keep a list of 490 sins to forgive. For me, it would be better to keep on forgiving. It would be the loving act to forgive because per 1 Corinthians 13:5 we have this interesting comment: love thinketh no evil. The word for think means to logically make an account. The New American Standard Bible translates it: does not take into account a wrong [suffered,] and the NIV says, keeps no record of wrongs. An evil person would keep an account in order to get even. A Christian does not.

There is no limit to sins forgiven. In my search of the Bible, there is only one sin that God will not forgive unbelief. It is called the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Why? The Holy Spirit comes to convict the sinner of sin in such a way that the sinner will either repent of sin or reject the Spirit and thus die unforgiven. God loves you and me so much it is His desire that we are forgiven of sins between Him and us. Therefore, because we are commanded to love one another, we must be moved by love to forgive. In 1Peter 4:8, we read: And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. The word charity there is the Greek Agapao for unselfish love. Modern translations will read love covers a multitude of sins. All sins can be covered. Moses was a murderer and God reached him. Saul of Tarsus may have murdered a Christian as part of his persecution and Christ saved him. Jesus forgave a woman caught in adultery. The Samaritan woman by the well was living with a man, not her husband, and Jesus reached out to her.

Sins are to be forgotten. Note what the Lord does for you and me when we are forgiven:

He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. (Ps 103:10-12)

He expects us to do the same!

Third Unforgiveness Holds Us In Bondage.
Unforgiveness is subject to judgment. Look at verses 23 thru 25 of Matthew 18. A man owed a huge debt and he was not able to pay. He was judged for a failure to pay debts. When you and I fail to forgive, we are placed in a similar position. Sin is judged. All sin is judged and the penalty of sin is always death. Death was something we could not pay because we were less than perfect. We all came short in the payment. Jesus is teaching His disciples a lesson designed to remind them of the difference between the world and His kingdom. The judgment was to be sold to another. Folks, we escaped the bondage of sin when we are saved. We are not to be in service of anyone but Jesus Christ. Unforgiveness allows Satan and his forces to entrap you and me.

Unforgiveness subjects us to torment. In verse 34 this man was delivered to his tormenters for failing to forgive another. People who are in financial difficulties will often become depressed. They are filled with worry. Think of what unforgivness does to you and me. We become anxious. We focus too much on the supposed hurt or what is owed us. It can go on and on. It removes us from serving the Lord. It can open the door to mental illness and further torment by satanic forces.

Unforgivness subjects us to bitterness. In our text this man was a bitter man. Look at how he treated the one who owed him a small amount. He put the man in prison. He did not act like someone who had been freed of a huge price. He did not show respect for the forgiveness shown him. No wonder the master came along and dealt with this man. Though he was free from debt, he was never free from the bondage of sin.

Since I have spoken this truth to you, we must move to the fourth pillar which helps free us from the bondage of the sin of unforgiveness...

Fourth -- Forgiveness Is A Willing Act.
Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled (Heb. 12:15)

There is a principle found in this verse that will help us. When we are in the state of unforgiveness we are failing in the grace of God. So forgiveness is not based upon our feelings but a biblical decision. Emotion should never drive our decisions. Note again Hebrews 12:15. It warns of bitterness springing up and leading to trouble. The Bible is clear forgiveness is not based on how you feel but what is right in the eyes of God. You can honestly tell the person you are forgiving, Your actions hurt me. Your words caused me pain.

Thus forgiveness requires constant vigilance on our part. The words looking diligently speak of the alertness we need to have. Sometimes the vigilance requires looking into the past. I have known people to bear grudges for years. If suddenly you discover that an action you did a few years ago is causing some hurt today, deal with it. Seek forgiveness and reconciliation. One of the saddest scenes is the funeral service where members of the family show up and are not only in grief but further saddened that they never reconciled some issue with the deceased.

Let us remember that the act of forgiveness is always relational. The person you forgive is a living human being. We are not to look at the person as an enemy and we must remember that the Bible teaches that we are to love God, each other, our neighbor, and even our enemies.

Lastly Our Fifth Pillar: Reconciliation Is Always The Answer.

Do not follow the example of Judas Iscariot. He led the authorities to arrest Jesus Christ for 30 pieces of silver. And what did he do? He never forgave himself. He never sought forgiveness. He drove himself to deep despair and suicide.

Follow the example of Jesus Christ. Peter rejected Jesus Christ three times. Did that stop the Lord from seeking reconciliation with Peter? No. Peter did not want to remain unforgiven and Jesus was willing to reach out and restore this man to His service. Listen to the words of Paul to the Roman church: Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not (Ro. 12:14). It is a different mindset! When people do attempt to persecute and curse, we are to respond with a blessing. The greatest blessing for many people besides salvation will be the restoring medicine of forgiveness. When Jesus hung on the cross He saw the soldiers casting lots for His robe. Note His words: Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do (Luke 23:34).

Conclusion. We know what to do. We are to be peacemakers. We are commanded to forgive. Forgiveness has no limits. A failure to forgive keeps us in bondage. Forgiveness is always a willful act in line with the Bible. And finally, reconciliation is always the answer. Remember, God forgave us first:

For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life (Ro. 5:10).

And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. (2 Cor. 5:18,20)

As you are forgiven, now go forgive others!
